Curaçao, Ideal Holiday Island
Curaçao is 444 square kilometres in size and the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles. It has 150,000 friendly inhabitants. Tourism is an important economic activity, but the island also has many other economic mainstays such as an international harbour and services.
Curaçao is an active and attractive island, and tourists are certain to have a fantastic holiday by taking advantage of its many beaches and diving areas, for example. Visitors can immerse themselves in the relaxed tropical island life with Curaçao’s unique international flavour.
The many international influences have found their way into the local language: Papiamentu is an independent language that developed from Spanish, Portuguese, English, French and Dutch. Generally, the inhabitants of Curaçao speak more than one language, always including Dutch.
Its international character is also demonstrated by the mixed population, the range of products in the shops, and the food served in restaurants. Over the past few years there has been a definite culinary growth, with plenty of nice restaurants. The island also has a scintillating nightlife.
During the day, visitors can have a look at the lively quarters of Punda and Otrobanda (part of the capital, Willemstad). But there is also plenty of unspoiled nature in the virgin “mondi” (countryside) of Curaçao, with surprising tropical scenery. Curaçao, lovingly called “dushi Kòrsou” (beautiful island) by its inhabitants, is truly an ideal holiday island.
